The seed of an idea…

Managing Director Bill Champness founded the company in 1997, with business partner Michael Tu. Their initial strategy was to focus solely on providing Dell spares, to enable companies to update and upgrade their hardware, maximising its lifespan and performance.

Trading then as Hardware Associates, as one of the first companies of its kind in the UK, it experienced rapid growth. In the early days, deals were brokered not via LinkedIn or email of course, but by fax!

This initial premise is still at the heart of the company today and as it continued to adapt to the rapidly changing business environment and advancements in technology, the offering has expanded to cover all major brands, complete refurbished units and IT solutions, and extensive support.

A lot has changed over 25 years

From modest beginnings in an office at the Hindhead junction of the A3 in Surrey (long before the days of the Hindhead Tunnel which opened in 2011), the business expanded and took on new premises in Petworth in 2006. Starting with a single unit initially, and by 2018 housed in four large units to support continued growth.

With business expansion came team growth. Renewed have been so lucky to have attracted some brilliantly talented team members over the years. From long-term colleagues Kirsten Giles and Tim Bryder to newer members of the team who have all made their own mark, we are a real unit, working together to build the business. We believe in and enjoy what we do, so there is a great camaraderie amongst the team.

Bill Champness commented:

“The team are the key to our success here at Renewed and I’m really proud of them all. They have showed real resilience through the pandemic and helped us to continue to grow through the last few years. They all work hard to deliver consistently excellent service and products to our clients, and we all have fun in the process. It’s a pleasure to come to work.”

Evolving the business for the future, starting with a rebrand and BSI Kitemark™ certification

A successful rebrand to The Renewed Store in 2021 reflected the company values and approach more clearly and creates the foundation for an ambitious business plan as we look ahead to the coming years. Now with thriving eCommerce stores on Amazon, eBay, OnBuy and Back Market, and a new direct eCommerce store launching in the Autumn, Renewed supports B2B and B2C consumers looking to take a more sustainable approach to IT purchases.

Achieving our BSI Kitemark™ certification as a Certified Reconditioner just ahead of our 25th anniversary was another moment to celebrate. The BSI certification gives additional confidence to those thinking of making the switch to refurbished. Read more about our BSI Accreditation here.

25 years and beyond…

We are super excited for what’s in store over the coming years and have some interesting projects in the pipeline to support more businesses to think refurbished first. Our vision is to continue to provide A-grade IT hardware to businesses and consumers and to build a clear structure for a truly circular economy in refurbished IT, by connecting businesses with IT to dispose of with schools and charities who can benefit from this high-performance hardware. We also have an eCommerce store underway which we will launch in the Autumn, along with other projects currently in development.

Bill commented:

“The world has changed and attitudes to reducing, recycling and refurbishing have all undertaken a seismic shift over the last few years. We are excited to be part of this movement and are passionate about supporting companies and individuals to take a more sustainable approach to IT purchases, without compromising on quality or performance. The impact we can all make by changing our consumer habits is significant.”

Thanks to all our team, clients and partners past and present for being part of the Renewed journey so far. Here’s to the next 25 years.
