Oldershaw School ICT quite with refurbished computers

Refurbished IT equipment led to £48,000 saving for The Oldershaw School

Located in Wallasey, Wirral, The Oldershaw School is a secondary school providing a nurturing educational environment for 800 pupils. Due to ongoing budget cuts, Network Manager, Keith Hallam, who is responsible for managing the school’s IT infrastructure, was left with an inadequate budget to be able to upgrade the school’s computer systems. After a decade of using desktops bought directly from Research Machines, it was clear the school desperately needed to upgrade the IT suite. Despite the need, the budget to buy 80 new computer desktops simply wasn’t available. Having spoken to an IT manager from another school, Keith was introduced to the option of refurbished IT equipment.

Why The Oldershaw School chose refurbished IT equipment

Keith had the following to say:

“We had an ageing infrastructure, and it really was time to upgrade our IT suite. The current machines had done their job but were slow and we were experiencing increasing issues which were interrupting students’ learning”.

“When I was told about refurbished computer systems, I was very pleasantly surprised to say the least. It was clear that I could pretty much get the same machine specification, quality, and speed as I would if I bought directly from the vendor but at a much cheaper cost. This meant I could actually upgrade all of the systems that we needed to, in one go”.

Refurbished Dell systems for the IT suite upgrade

Knowing the amount of computers needed, his budget and the specification needed, we worked with Keith to supply 80 refurbished desktop computers to upgrade the whole computer system for the school.

“I was astonished at the difference in cost between buying brand new and refurbished. If we had gone directly to Dell to replace our computer systems, it would have cost £72,000. By choosing to work with Renewed and invest in their refurbished Dell systems, we saved a huge £48,000. We basically managed to kit out three computer rooms for the price of one, which really is amazing.“

The benefits of choosing refurbished IT equipment

Bill Champness, Managing Director at Renewed, added:

“Many people have the wrong perception of refurbished computer systems, they think refurbished means second hand when that’s simply not true. Refurbished means that most of the machine has been completely changed to work just like a brand-new machine but doesn’t carry the same hefty price tag. Schools and colleges up and down the UK should really be looking at refurbished IT as it’s a real & viable option when it comes to replacing old or ageing kit. They get the same spec and speed of a new machine, and each machine comes with a warranty so there really is no risk.”

The Oldershaw School; saving money and helping the environment

The students and staff at The Oldershaw School are enjoying their new machines, which are facilitating and supporting pupils’ learning journeys.

“Everyone actually thinks they’re brand-new machines from Dell because the quality, speed and features are that good,” added Keith. “I think we need to raise awareness of the role refurbished systems can play in the education sector, especially given the huge cost savings they provide which can free up the budget for other resources needed elsewhere in the school or college.”

In addition to providing a significant cost saving to our clients – often freeing up budget to be spend in other important areas – choosing refurbished IT equipment is also having a positive impact on the environment. Each year, millions of laptops, tablets and desktop computers are thrown away- creating huge landfill and e-waste issues around the globe. The current low levels of recycling mean that tonnes of materials such as copper, silver and gold are lost, and the earth’s finite resources are unnecessarily depleted.

Choosing refurbished IT equipment, the lifetime of a unit can be extended to 36-months, and to up to 10 years; meaning less waste and a reduction on the environmental impact.
